Clubs and Activities
It’s easy to get involved at Ransom Everglades
Dozens of clubs and activities at Ransom Everglades offer opportunities to make friends, discover and develop new talents, contribute to the community, and interact with members of the school’s faculty. Students have fun while learning about collaboration, leadership, problem-solving and being part of a greater good.
Clubs are so important at Ransom Everglades that they are woven into the school day at the middle school. At the upper school, clubs meet before, during and after school hours. Through their participation in service clubs, academic teams, honor societies and school government, students make a difference on and off campus.
Various community activities and annual traditions also help bring out the best in Ransom Everglades students, who plan, execute and enjoy campus events ranging from Spirit Week to St. Alban's Day, an annual holiday festival for underserved children on both RE campuses.

Middle school math team finishes second in the state
Ransom Everglades' middle school math team wrapped up an incredible season with a second-place finish in the 2024 Florida Mathcounts State Competition in Orlando March 29 as Daniel Li '28 finished third individually. Li became the first-ever RE middle schooler to qualify for the national championship, and coach Jess Merrick was named coach of the national team. RE's Joshie Khohayting '28 finished eighth overall, and Alex Tevelow '28 and Maxie Wu '28 each finished in the top 25 percent of competitors. One Book One Day One School returns for The Storm Runner and author J.C. Cervantes
Read MoreStudents at Ransom Everglades welcomed a bestselling author to the middle school and spent a school day immersed in activities related to her book during the annual One Book One Day One School (OBODOS) event on April 4. Students read The Storm Runner in advance of OBODOS, then enjoyed a book signing and assembly with author J.C. Cervantes along with a host of activities connected to themes in the book. -
Two students qualify for National Chemistry Olympiad
Max Grunwald '26 and Emma Sharp '25 qualified for the U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad on April 20, joining more than 1,000 students across the nation who achieved exceptional scores on a recent chemistry assessment. The results of the national examination, which will be administered locally, will be used to determine qualifiers for the International Chemistry Olympiad. Zoo Miami Goodwill Ambassador launches Earth Month at RE
Ron Magill, a wildlife photographer and Goodwill Ambassador for Zoo Miami, helped Ransom Everglades launch its celebration of Earth Month by sharing the compelling story of K’wasi, the first male lion cub born at the zoo. Students at the April 2 assembly at the Lewis Family Auditorium oohed, ahhed and laughed along at K'wasi's tale, which was illustrated by Magill's extraordinary photography.Read More -
More than 20 qualify for speech and debate championships
More than 20 RE speech and debate students qualified for the 2024 National Speech and Debate Association National Championship with stellar performances at the March 15-18 district qualifying tournament at Ransom Everglades. The national tournament will be held June 16-21 in Des Moines, Iowa.Read More
Under Coach Kate Hamm, 15 Raiders earned first-place finishes: Claudia Colina '25, Carlos Del Cañal Fernandez '25, the team of Francesca Lopez '24 and Hannah Risin '25, Bridget Mestepey '26, Eduardo Michelsen '25, Lilah Murphy '27, the team of Varun Raju '24 and Thomas Crowley '24, and the team of Mia Bouyoucef '25, Luciana Pardo '25, Anya Bhandari '25, Minnie Zhou '26, Jillian Demos-Brown '25. -
MS mathletes win Miami MathCounts competition
Ransom Everglades' middle school math team won first place in the annual MathCounts team competition at Miami Dade College on Feb. 24, as three RE mathletes finished in the top four individually. Joshie Khohayting '28 earned second place; Alex Tevelow '28, third; and Daniel Li '28 finished fourth in the field of 219 students representing 29 teams. With the title, Ransom Everglades easily advanced to the March 29 Florida State Competition in Orlando.Read More -
Raiders dominate the South Florida History Bees
Read MoreRansom Everglades students dominated the South Florida Regional History and Geography Bees on March 2 at the upper school, winning eight of the nine medals awarded in the history bee and sweeping the gold medals in the geography bee. Competing against 99 students from a number of local schools, Alejandro Gonzalez '30 and Julian Jelke '29 won gold medals in the history bee, and Rohan Harihara '30, Noah Veras '29 and Iker Fierro '28 earned gold medals in the geography bee. -
RE students travel overseas during winter break
Ransom Everglades students enjoyed educational excursions to Japan and Taiwan (upper school) and Puerto Rico (seventh and eighth graders) during the February winter break. The cultural immersion and service learning trips allowed students to explore the history, food, music, languages, natural beauty and architecture of their destination countries while also getting to know their classmates better and developing independence as young travelers.Read More -
Robotics team wins big at the South Florida Regional VEX Robotics Championship
The robotics team of Mateo Heitner '25, Ivan Rosenfeld '25, Victoria Paraoulaki de Miranda '24, Erick Gross '24 and Gabriel Karsenti '26 put forth one of the most successful performances in RE robotics history at the South Florida Regional VEX Robotics Championship in Miami Springs on March 2. The Raiders won The Excellence Award, the Robot Skills Challenge award and Tournament Finalist recognition, triple-qualifying for the world championships in April in Dallas, Tex.Read More -
Speech and debate earns four titles at states
Read MoreThe RE speech and debate team could barely fit the massive trophy haul from the 2024 Florida Forensic League Varsity State Championships on the bus ride home from Wellington, Fla. RE students won four state titles as coach Kate Hamm earned Region 5 Coach of the Year honors at the March 2-3 event. Claudia Colina '25 finished first in Dramatic Interpretation; Eduardo Michelsen '25 finished first in Domestic Extemporaneous; Danny Mendelson '25 and Max Salomon '25 captured the Public Forum Debate title; and Sindhu Talluri '25, Nora Brue '25, Lauren Page '24, Ian Fox '24 and T.J. Malone '25 won the championship in World Schools Debate. -
Students attend Model UN events in New York and Miami
Two dozen of RE's Model United Nations team members participated in the National High School Model United Nations event March 9-11 in New York City, engaging in debates with other students and interacting with diplomatic representatives of various countries. They also had the honor of meeting Malala Yousafzai, the Nobel Peace Prize recipient and education activist in front of the Non-Violence sculpture on the United Nations plaza. Young REsearchers share their work at a professional physics conference
Seven Ransom Everglades students are among the youngest attendees presenting original research at the annual American Physical Society Conference in Minneapolis March 4-5. Members of RE’s Young REsearchers Program (YREP), Sofia Rakhimi ’25, Paloma Lopes ’25, Michael Mederos ’25, Francisco Gomez Rivas-Vazquez ’24, Dieter Manstein ’25, Carlos Horcasitas ’25 and Mia Campbell ’25 submitted abstracts on their work with RE's portable laser and traveled to the conference physics teachers Dr. Emily Grace and Paul Natland '02.Read More -
RE rocks for Ukraine relief at spring concert
Ransom Everglades musicians, singers, dancers and production specialists combined their myriad talents for a fundraising concert at the Lewis Family Auditorium on Feb. 29. Hosted in part by the RE student group Rock 4 Relief, the Spring Concert 2024: A Tribute for Ukraine drew a large and enthusiastic crowd, and showed the school community at its best.Read More

Brazil highlighted during student-led assembly
Members of RE's Brazilian Culture Club highlighted the challenges and opportunities faced by Brazil during a multi-faceted upper school assembly on Feb. 27. The centerpiece of the event was an interview with a leader of a Brazilian organization whose focus is combating poverty in the nation's most vulnerable populations. Students also shared an informative video made by Portuguese 4 students, and the RE Combo performed Bossa Nova to conclude the assembly.Read More -
RE launches the 'Year of the Dragon' during Chinese New Year festival
Ransom Everglades kicked off The Year of the Dragon with a rollicking Lunar New Year festival on a brilliantly bedecked Touzet patio. Tradition, celebration and fun converged at the upper school on Feb. 13 as RE students, parents, faculty, staff and friends gathered to enjoy Chinese delicacies and music, dance and acrobatics performances. The Chinese Parent Committee, the school’s Chinese Culture Club and the many students in the Chinese classes of faculty member Xiaohong Teng organized the events and helped decorate La Brisa with red-and-gold lanterns and silk dragons. RE students explore 'unbound' ideas at TEDxRansomEvergladesSchool
Seven Ransom Everglades students – Mia Bouyoucef '25, Nora Brue '25, Sophia Linfield '26, Eduardo Michelsen '25, Luna Molla '25, Emma Perdigon '25 and Nina Rivera '25 – explored breaking barriers and unleashing possibilities through their talks on the theme of "unbound" at TEDxRansomEvergladesSchool on Feb. 9 at Swenson Hall. The entirely student-run event was dedicated to RE parent-of-alumni Tom Bales, who passed away last fall and was credited for inspiring the creation of TEDxCoconutGrove, the predecessor to TEDxRansomEvergladesSchool.Read More -
Coach Hamm honored as RE Speech and Debate thrives in 2024 events
Ransom Everglades' speech and debate team began 2024 with a host of top performances at local and national events. The highlights: more than 70 qualifications to the Florida Forensic League Varsity State Championship during an event at RE on Feb. 2, and a notable showing at the Barkley Forum at Emory University in Atlanta on Jan. 27-28. There, coach Kate Hamm was inducted into the prestigious national Golden Key Society for excellence in coaching.Read More -
Marine Field Research class collects fossils on the Peace River
Read MoreRansom Everglades' upper school Marine Field Research class took a marine geology field trip to the Peace River in Ft. Myers, Fla., on Jan. 24, where students waded into the water to search for ~3 million-year-old Pliocene fossils. The class uncovered ancient bull shark teeth, tiger shark teeth, gray shark teeth, snaggletooth shark teeth, mako shark teeth, turtle shell pieces, and other artifacts from when Florida was underwater. -
Ninth graders return from Everglades trips with Outward Bound
Read MoreRE's ninth graders have completed their annual treks to the Everglades, the five-day, four-night adventures with Outward Bound that are a 40-year tradition at RE. Departing in three waves, ninth graders traveled in January to the Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge, where they set off from different locations in small groups, tasked with finding their way back to base camp. They used compasses and maps to navigate canoes through mangrove tunnels, stormy weather and high winds. RE physical education teacher Tim McAllister oversaw the adventures, and ensured that students prepared during their PE classes.

RE teams win four first places at the Winter South Florida History Bee and Bowl
RE swept the top awards – four first places – at the 2024 South Florida Winter History Bee and Bowl at Ransom Everglades on Jan. 20 and collected other top finishes. Daniel Figueroa '24 won the varsity bee title and Parker Jelke '27 won the junior varsity bee. RE's Jelke, Jacob Aronow '26 and Charles Reizenstein '26 won the varsity bowl title and Jack Gonzalez '28, Jack Akselrad '28, Jaz Puri '28 and Noah Veras '29 won the JV bowl title.Read More

Traditions and Campus Activities

Cannon Painting
Students have been painting RE’s 17th-century cannon for more than 50 years, using the upper school campus centerpiece to make social statements, celebrate holidays and welcome visitors. -
Sixth-Grade Day on the Bay
Sixth graders kayak, swim, sail, participate in a service activity and make new friends during an annual field trip to Shake-A-Leg Miami. -
The House System
On both campuses, RE "houses" are centers of student life, service and spirit activities. At the middle school, students join houses that draw inspiration from Hogwarts, school history and South Florida wildlife; the upper school houses focus on native species. -
The Ringing Rock
The Ringing Rock is sounded on special occasions by students, faculty or administrators. Installed in October 2020, the sculpture was created by Coconut Grove artist Mark Handforth P'18 '21, combining oolitic limestone with a large yellow ring and tuned ship's bell. -
OBODOS
Every spring at the middle school, the entire student body reads the same book and joins in a one-day celebration of reading and learning called One Book, One Day, One School (OBODOS). The annual event includes a visit from the author and a full day of activities related to the author’s work. -
Spirit Week
Spirit Weeks on both campuses pit classes together in a host of friendly competitions, from sporting events to pumpkin-carving to lip-sync and more. The week cements friendships and creates memories that are talked about for years. -
St. Alban’s Day
A tradition at Ransom Everglades for more than 30 years, St. Alban’s Day brings hundreds of local children from St. Alban’s Child Enrichment Center and other schools to RE’s campuses for an extraordinary winter festival that includes petting zoos, arts and crafts, face-painting, Santa Claus, cotton candy and more. -
Thanksgiving Drives
The annual Thanksgiving food drives for the Miami Rescue Mission (upper school) and Frankie Shannon Rolle Center (middle school) engage the entire RE student body and become centerpieces of the school's celebration of the Thanksgiving holiday, allowing students to show their gratitude and share with their Miami neighbors. -
Battle for the Oar
Every fall since 1974, Ransom Everglades and Palmer Trinity School compete on the football field in a much-anticipated game that decides who take possession of an oar inscribed with the victor of each year's game. The team that wins keeps the oar until the following year.

Founded in 1903, Ransom Everglades School is a coeducational, college preparatory day school for grades 6 - 12 located on two campuses in Coconut Grove, Florida. Ransom Everglades School produces graduates who "believe that they are in the world not so much for what they can get out of it as for what they can put into it." The school provides rigorous college preparation that promotes the student's sense of identity, community, personal integrity and values for a productive and satisfying life, and prepares the student to lead and to contribute to society.
