John Mistele leads surging RE math team

John Mistele '17 finished first in statistics in back-to-back regional math competitions on Jan. 30 and Feb. 13, leading RE's surging math team to its best result in two years at the Feb. 13 event. Just over a month into the math season, John leads the entire state in statistics.

John earned a remarkable perfect score – 30 out of 30 – in statistics at the Cypress Bay Regional math competition Jan. 30, topping a field of 117 and leading RE's statistics team to a fourth-place finish overall. Two weeks later at the Ferguson Region 5 math competition, John missed just two questions as he bested a field of 84.

The RE math team finished fifth overall among 42 teams at the event at John A. Ferguson High in Miami, its best finish at such an event in two years.

"These kids are super-dedicated," said Karen Key, an RE math teacher and math team sponsor. "I'm not sure that anyone can understand how hard they work and how passionate they are. It's amazing.... We probably have 10 or 12 kids who have the potential to be top five" in the state.

John Mistele's performance led a statistics team that included Timothy O'Brien '17 and Sam Chaneles '16 to a fifth overall. At Cypress Bay, John teamed up with Timothy O'Brien '17, Sam Chaneles '16 and Carlotta Verita '16 for a fourth-place result. Timothy earned 10th in that competition.

At Ferguson High, the calculus team of Joon Kim '17, Pancho Cabrera '17, Guillermo Wenrich '17 and Patrick Visan '17 finished third. Joon led the team with a 10th-place individual finish. Eric Cai '17 placed 14th.

The precalculus team of Anna Mistele '19, Valeria Vela '19, Ilija Wan-Simm '19 and Makenzie Love '19 finished fifth. Jessica Lee '19 and Julia Bernstein '19 competed in their first Geometry competition and did well, helping the RE team claim its fifth overall finish.

At Cypress Bay, Pancho Cabrera '17 claimed eighth place in a field of 341 students in calculus, and the calculus team of Thor Andreassen '17, Eric Cai '17, Natalie Fredman '17 and Guillermo Wenrich '17 got ninth in the team event.

The RE math team currently sits in fourth place in the Florida Mathematics League, an ongoing competition among schools throughout the state based on weekly 30-minute exams.
