Boys' tennis wins state championship

RE boys' tennis earned its first state championship in nine years with a dominant victory in the Class 1A final over Pensacola Catholic on April 24, as John Michael Holtmann '17, Antonio Mora '18, Samuel Rubell '19 and Grant Dill '19 swept four matches.
Holtmann and Mora, who was returning from an injury that kept him out of the district playoffs, prevailed in a grueling doubles match, 6-7 (4), 6-0, 10-1; Rubell and Dill won the No. 2 doubles match, 6-3, 6-3; and Holtmann and Rubell each won convincingly in singles: Holtman by a 6-1, 6-0 score and Rubell, 6-2, 6-0.

The meet took place in Casselberry, Fla., outside Orlando. Just hours before the final, the Raiders defeated St. Andrews by a 4-1 margin in the semifinals. They also defeated Sarasota's Out-of-Door Academy, 4-0, in the first round.

The Raiders redeemed their disappointing defeat in the first round of the state playoffs last year to The Sagemont School, which went on to win the 2016 state title. The boys' team has been led by coaches Peter Lehmann and Thomas Dughi, and Patrick Visan '17 and Mercury Sawatari '17 contributed to the championship season with strong play in the district tournament.
