Seniors sent off with fanfare and turtles

Fewer than 24 hours after jumping in the Ansin Pool to celebrate their last day of classes, seniors re-assembled on campus with their parents for a special day of reflection, commemoration and fun at the annual Senior Send-Off.
Seniors placed their personal bricks in the Quad, heard from class salutatorian Ryan Guillen '17, enjoyed a tribute video, collected special gifts from Head of School Penny Townsend (four stuffed turtles!) and shared delicious hors d'oeuvres and sandwiches in a gymnasium bedecked with U.S. license plates and a road to the future.

"What a pleasure," Townsend said at the May 13 event, "to be in front of so much happiness, joy and, yes, relief."

After a welcome in the Lewis Family Auditorium from Head of the Upper School Ken Mills, Townsend read to the seniors, for perhaps the final time, from Paul Ransom's letter and offered her annual keeper-of-the-flame gifts (the stuffed turtles) to four seniors she urged to be stewards of the school's values and mission, Franklin Civantos '17, Joon Kim '17, Anne Gutierrez '17 and Joeli Ertel '17.

She also thanked Ransom Everglades Parents' Association President Laurie McWilliams and Senior Send-Off chairs JoAnne Civantos, Vivian Duyos and Lori Harvey, who organized volunteers and helped put on the event.

Guillen offered short but pointed words of wisdom after thanking RE's teachers and the assembled parents, telling the Class of 2017: "I won't say 'be yourself,' but I will dare you to be the best people you can be."

Added Guillen: "I've become a better person for having known you all. For that, I thank you."

The class was received as soon-to-be-alumni from Director of Advancement Greg Pollard and Director of Alumni Relations Vicki Carbonell Williamson '88. Williamson introduced the Class of 2017 legacy seniors – those with parents who are Ransom Everglades alumni.

Eleven seniors and their parents were invited to the stage to receive plaques that included the parents' and seniors' yearbook photos.

On May 12, seniors had leaped into the Ansin Pool after the final bell to celebrate their last day of classes. The party continued onto the football field, where they played on an inflatable slip-n-slide.
