Four Raiders inducted into Hall of Fame
Four Raiders – Bothwell C. Gonas '89, Jenny Stadler Krueger '93, Melissa Saiontz Luse '06 and Arturo C. Pedroso '03 – were inducted on April 11 to the Ransom Everglades Athletic Hall of Fame during an emotional and celebratory evening with friends, family, current Hall of Famers and other members of the RE community at the Pagoda.

Gonas and Saiontz Luse were honored for their exploits in tennis; Stadler Krueger was inducted for her prowess as a volleyball, soccer and track and field athlete; and Pedroso, for his excellence in soccer. Athletic director Corey Goff presided over the event, and Head of School Penny Townsend concluded the evening with a congratulatory message.
Among the current Hall of Famers in attendance: Cathy Harrison Balestra '90, Jim Beverley '62, Carlos Carbonell '93, Jessica Greenwald Ladin '93, Penny Matthews, Owen Paris, Lisa Sayfie '91, Michiel "Monkey" van de Kreeke '88, Dave Villano '79, James Weaver '90 and Amy Sayfie Zichella '93.
Russel Lilly '91 served as a presenter for Gonas, a nationally ranked tennis player in high school who attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro on a full scholarship; Carbonell presented for Stadler Krueger, who walked on to the track and field and volleyball teams at Duke, where she became a record holder in the javelin throw and volleyball starter. Rachel Saiontz '08 presented for her sister Saiontz Luse, who played tennis at Princeton after breaking Chris Evert's record for the most high school tennis titles in Florida. The sisters eventually teamed up as doubles partners at Princeton and went undefeated.
Villano introduced Pedroso, who still holds an assortment of RE all-time records in soccer, including the single-season record for assists with 31. Pedroso, who went on to play soccer at the College of the Holy Cross and American University, contributes to an inner-city soccer program.
"In true Raider fashion, he's eager to give back more than he received," Villano said. "You made everyone around you better then and now. That is your legacy."
As if dishing out an assist on the soccer field, Pedroso pushed back the praise.
"It's special to celebrate the friendships we have, the bond and brotherhood we created from our class," he said. "You ... and the coaching staff have truly transformed each and every one of us in a very positive way... Thank you."
Other Raiders shared similar sentiments. Gonas offered an ode to tennis and his loyal friends and family. Saiontz Luse called playing tennis at RE "the quintessential scholar-athlete experience."
"I love being on campus," Stadler Krueger said. "I feel like I'm home when I am here ... I am so honored to be here tonight with amazing teachers and coaches and administrators who are absolutely making a difference in the lives of kids."
"Please keep doing what you are doing," Pedroso said to the coaches in attendance. "It truly is special and transformative."
