College admission officials advise RE Class of 2021
College admission officials from six institutions – Brown University, Caltech, Cornell University, Hamilton College, Rice University and the University of Virginia – offered guidance and advice to Ransom Everglades juniors and their families during a wide-ranging symposium on Jan. 11 that served as an informal launch of the college process for RE's Class of 2021.
The first-time event at Ransom Everglades, which was designed to provide helpful information and timely guidance to juniors and their families as they began in earnest the college process, drew nearly 300 people.
The event opened with an opening meeting in the Lewis Family Auditorium with all of the visiting officials: Jonathan Burdick, the Vice Provost for Enrollment at Cornell University; Meagan Donohoe, Associate Dean at the University of Virginia; Brandon Mack, Associate Director of Admission at Rice University; Ana Saul-Sykes, Director of Admission for Special Programs at Brown University; Derek Terrell, Associate Director of Undergraduate Admission at Caltech; and Peaches Valdes, Dean of Admission at Hamilton College.
The officials then served in pairs on a trio of panels to allow for interaction with smaller groups of families in the auditorium, Pagoda and Rehearsal Hall. Those panels were entitled: "Majors and Minors and Their Role in College Admission," "Early Admission: History, Policies and Practice," and "The Truth About Standardized Testing."
The symposium concluded with an opportunity for juniors and their families to meet with their individual college counselors. Ransom Everglades Director of College Counseling Claudia Jolivert opened the morning event and introduced the college officials. She was joined by Daniel Creasy, Senior Associate Director of College Counseling; Aleny Garcia, Associate Director of College Counseling; Roger Caron, Coordinator of Student-Athlete College Recruitment; and Terry Giffen, RE's college counseling consultant.
