Renowned physicist to visit campus
Renowned physicist Brian Greene, as comfortable on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert as he is directing Columbia’s Center for Theoretical Physics or lecturing on superstring theory, will share his unassuming brilliance and charisma with the RE community at 7 p.m. October 24 at the Lewis Family Auditorium.
As it approaches the first anniversary of its REinventing Excellence campaign, Ransom Everglades has invited Greene to discuss his views on the complementary relationship between the humanities and STEM fields.
Greene is known for his clear and engaging presentations of extremely complex theoretical physics. One of the most widely respected physicists of this era, he seeks to use superstring theory and quantum geometry to realize Einstein’s quest to unify the theories of physics. He has been celebrated both for his research and his accessible showcasing of it. The Washington Post called him “the single best explainer of abstruse concepts in the world today.”
He has sought to tell the stories of science and scientists in ways that resonate with popular audiences. He was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for non-fiction; a host of two NOVA miniseries based on his books; and a lecturer whose TED talks have accrued more than seven million views. He has been a guest on The Tonight Show multiple times.
Greene, who holds degrees from Harvard University and Oxford University, also has made bit appearances in films including New Line Cinema’s Frequency and The Last Mimzy, and he appeared as himself in The Big Bang Theory.
