Football keeps oar, goes undefeated

Led by a strong senior class, Ransom Everglades’ varsity football team maximized an abbreviated season that included a delayed start because of COVID-19: The Raiders went undefeated and won by an average margin of 41-9. They also kept the coveted oar at RE with a road victory over Palmer Trinity, and benefited from the talents of RE’s first female football player.
The Raiders played in just one close game in a five-game season that ended with a 56-7 victory over True North Classical Academy: that was the annual Battle for the Oar contest against Palmer Trinity, which the Raiders won 27-20. Roger Caron, the 2019 Florida Independent School Football League Coach of the Year, led the Raiders for the third straight fall; under Caron, RE has accrued a 12-3 record over the past two seasons and hasn't lost a road game since October 2018.

Throughout the season, Thomas Schein ’21, Walker White ’21, Thomas Heisel ’21, Nick Lampert ’21, Elliot Sable ’21 and James Srebnick ’21 led on offense and defense. Schein threw for 14 touchdowns and averaged 272 passing yards per game. Lampert led in all-purpose yardage, and Heisel's efforts on the ground helped the Raiders’ offense to a nearly 60 percent third-down conversion percentage. The defense, anchored by Heisel and White, forced nine turnovers. Opponents managed just a 38 percent completion rate and third-down conversion rate of 17 percent.

Lindsay Gould ’21, who is headed to Brown University to continue her soccer career, contributed six extra points as a place kicker, and Caleb Carlson ’22 bolstered the special teams. RE honored the team's seniors, including Matthew Gallagher '21, Jackson Mopsick '21, Christopher Basile '21, Matthew Edelstein '21, Hayes Holly '21 and Jacob Martin '21, before the last game of the season.

The Raiders opened with a 44-14 victory over Marathon; defeated Coral Shores 28-0; defeated Palmer Trinity; then finished with a 50-6 victory over Everglades Prep before the senior-night victory over True North.
