Class of 2022 gathers for College Admission Symposium
Ransom Everglades juniors and their parents gathered virtually on January 16 for a deep-dive into the upcoming college admission season during RE’s annual Junior College Admission Symposium. Families received a frank, lively and informative admission primer from Erik DeAngelis, Senior Associate Director of Admission at Brown University, and met in small groups with their newly appointed college counselors at RE.
DeAngelis, the president-elect of the New England Association for College Admission Counseling, shared insight into how the pandemic has altered the admission process. He discussed the shift to test-optional approaches, virtual tours and events, and explained how the challenges of COVID-19 have caused colleges to become more flexible. He also covered traditional ground in the admissions process, discussing how evolving institutional priorities affect the admission process at individual schools, and what students can do to shine light on their candidacies.
He offered students practical tips for writing college applications, urging them to focus on authenticity, sincerity, humility and recognition of privilege. He reminded them to resist heavy-handed help from hired counselors or other adults, noting the disdain reserved for applications that don't appear to reflect the applicant's own work. He urged them to keep their grades up this spring and be smart about their course selection for their senior year.

“You all are here at one of the best schools on the east coast,” he said. “You have one of the best college counseling staffs available to you. They know what they are doing. They know what they are talking about. Listen to them.”
RE’s Director of College Counseling Lew Stival opened the event, welcoming families and DeAngelis. After DeAngelis' presentation and a Q & A, juniors and their parents broke into groups to meet with their new college counselors: Senior Associate Director Daniel Creasy, Senior Associate Director Claudia Jolivert or Associate Director Aleny Garcia.
During those cohort meetings, each college counselor provided an introduction and brief roadmap to the college counseling journey, and took questions.
