Students capture and tag sharks during field research trip on Biscayne Bay

Ransom Everglades upper school students captured and tagged three sharks during a research outing to the Stiltsville area of Biscayne Bay this past spring. The upper school students in RE's "Biology and Ecology of Sharks" course performed comprehensive scientific workups on the sharks onboard a research vessel under the tutelage of professional scientists.
Ransom Everglades partnered with the environmental organization Field School to allow students in the popular class the unique hands-on learn opportunity, a centerpiece of the curriculum. During the outing in March, students successfully caught, processed and released one tiger shark and two blacktip sharks. They measured the sharks, attaching tracking tags, taking DNA samples and checking the sharks for parasites before safely releasing them back into the bay.

The course is taught by RE faculty member Heather Marshall, a marine scientist specializing in shark stress physiology. RE faculty member Kristine Stump, a marine biologist specializing in tropical marine ecology, served as a chaperone.
