Unprecedented success for RE at Berklee

The RE Combo and vocalist Isa Peña '19 combined their talents to bring home an unprecedented four trophies from the 2019 Berklee High School Jazz Festival Jan. 26 in Boston. Peña won first place in the Jazz Singers Showcase and was invited to open the evening's awards program, where she sang "Almost Like Being In Love" to a packed house of 4,000 at the Hynes Veterans Memorial Auditorium. Connor Munroe '21 claimed the Outstanding Musicianship Award for his class, and the RE Combo under Jon Hamm claimed second place – its best finish ever – in its class.
James Gerrard '19 earned a Judge's Choice award as the combo's outstanding performer in its three-song set. The Berklee College of Music also awarded four scholarships for RE students to attend the 2019 Berklee Summer Music Camp. For more than 50 years, the Berklee jazz festival has been the largest event of its kind in the nation, attracting thousands of musicians from around the world. This year's event drew 200 groups and 3,000 students.

Peña is taught by Sam Shapiro, and fellow performing arts department member Flor Ancewicz served as chaperone for the trip. The RE Combo is comprised of drummer Gerrard, leader and tenor saxophonist Munroe, multi-saxophonist and musical director Alex Otero '19, bassist Danny Sauceda'19, trombonist Will Mathes '19, and pianist Max Vallone '22.
