Students share summer internship details
Most people spent their summers trying to escape mosquitos. Maya Rosen '21 collected the pesky insects in traps in her backyard, stored them in plastic containers in her parents' freezer, then took them each day to a lab at Florida International University. There, she sorted them under a microscope by sex and species to assist scientists researching the neutralization of viral transmission of mosquitos.
Her 2018 internship was one of about 20 featured at the Lewis Family Auditorium Jan. 31 during the sixth-annual Ransom Everglades Internship Forum.

Students used poster board and digital displays to showcase their work at various science and fabrication labs, medical institutes, art spaces, technology start-ups and summer camps. They found their summer opportunities through RE's Summer Learning through Internships and Mentoring (SLIM) program or Bowden fellowships, by reaching out directly to local scientists, by partnering with members of the RE community or, in the case of Connor Sahs '20, by launching his own start-up (an automotive detailing business).
Emma Broad '19 worked under the tutelage of RE parent Shyam Gajavelli, an associate scientist at the University of Miami's Miller School of Medicine, to study the use of stem cells to combat traumatic brain injury for The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. "I learned a lot about neuroscience, which I never had experienced in the past," Broad said. "I got a better understanding of what cells look like, and I was in the lab all summer."
"What you see here are just some of the many summer experiences in which our students participated," said Paul Natland '02, a faculty member and director of the SLIM program. "We hope to expand the number of opportunities available in the future."
