More than 400 rock 'n' roll at REPA auction

More than 400 members of the RE community donned heavy metal T-shirts, leather jackets and black – lots of black – make-up, nail polish and temporary tattoos for the 35th annual Ransom Everglades Parents' Association auction, this one bearing the theme: RE Rocks: Party through the Decades. The Feb. 23 event, an important fund-raiser for the school’s financial aid program, delighted the decked-out throng and showed early returns of more than $200,000 from ticket sales and bidding. Photo Gallery
Party goers snatched up an array of exciting auction items including an African safari for two in South Africa ($15,000); eight RE graduation front-row seats ($5,600); a Grand Bay Club (Key Biscayne) lifetime membership ($8,000); and a commissioned portrait by celebrity photographer Timothy Greenfield-Sanders ’70 ($20,000). Attendees claimed some 500 items in all ranging from bongo drums autographed by Gloria Estefan to a hand-knitted afghan in RE colors and a week stay in a villa in the South of France overlooking the Mediterranean.

The auction offered a pre-event wine tasting in the Middle School courtyard courtesy of Christie and Jeffrey Wolfe as the RE Combo entertained near the cafeteria. The main event took place in the gymnasium, which featured a giant guitar hanging over the bar. Guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres, drinks and steak, shrimp and poke bowls for dinner. Rock-n-roll classics played in the background, eventually drawing attendees to the dance floor.

Parents Lydia Touzet and Katharine Rubino once again served as auction co-chairs. They were assisted by REPA President Melissa Buckner, host committee chair Bonnie Seipp and others including Javier Lugo, Eva Arango, Renae Page, Soledad Awad, Juan Prieto, Hilary Gershman, Laura Roberts and Linda Gail Levy.

Head of School Penny Townsend welcomed guests along with board chair Andy Ansin ’81; they were joined by many board members past and present, and RE teachers, staff and administration.

Auction proceeds will support financial aid for students who otherwise might not be able to attend RE. The school awarded more than $5.7 million in aid for 2018-19.
