Speech and debate wins multiple district titles

Ransom Everglades won the 2019 South Florida District Sweepstakes Awards for speech and debate as five RE students won individual or team district titles at the South Florida District Tournament at Miami Beach Senior High on March 9-10. Oliver Stern '19 and Dori Schurr '20 won the title in Public Forum Debate; Alex Dray '21 in U.S. Extemporaneous Speaking; Georgia Crosby '21, Informational Speaking; and Alexandra Henriquez '22, Dramatic Interpretation. They join Zoe San Martin '20, who last month was named district champion in the Senate.
The debaters competed on March 9 and the speech competitors on March 10, and all qualified to compete at the National Speech and Debate National Tournament June 16-21 in Dallas, Tex. They will be joined by a host of other RE students, all of whom claimed second-place finishes in the district championship: Brianna Kerr '19 and Marley Rywell '19 in Public Forum Debate; Joan Joseph '21, U.S. Extemporaneous Speaking; Danny Jackson '21, Humorous Interpretation; Clara Villalba '22, International Extemporaneous Speaking; and Megan Houchin '19, Informational Speaking.

The students have been led by teacher and coach Kate Hamm, the Florida Forensic League 2019 Coach of the Year.
