Spoken-word poets return to RE
Traveling poets and educators Kane Smego and Giddy Perez returned to Ransom Everglades for their annual visit, introducing students to spoken-word poetry with high energy and a spirit of inclusion. The duo provided the entire Upper School student body with a survey of the art while working intensively with the school's freshmen English classes. The pair's first visit in 2016 inspired the formation of RE's Poetry Club.
Smego and Perez, who visited the Ransom Campus from April 15-18, explained the use of metaphors, similes, imagery and other literary devices, while inspiring students to tell their own stories in verse, and giving them the tools to construct their own "Ten Things You Should Know About . . . " poems. The pair also emphasized cultural competency skills that help facilitate healthy identity development, central elements of RE's board-led diversity, equity and inclusion initiative.

Smego's and Perez's visit has become a central part of the special programming offered to RE's freshmen to assist in their transition to the Upper School. The Class of 2022 also has experienced the Bay Studies curriculum in physical education, the peer-to-peer health education provided by RE juniors and seniors, and the annual Outward Bound trip into the Everglades.
Smego, a National Poetry Slam finalist and co-founder of Sacrificial Poetry, is the associate director of Next Level, a cultural diplomacy program. Perez, a poet, beat boxer, emcee and barber, was the slam-master of The Misfits Slam Team that tied for second at the 2013 Southern Fried Poetry Slam in New Orleans. The visit was coordinated by English Department Chair Joshua Stone.
