Valedictorian sweep for Mistele siblings
Following her two older brothers at Ransom Everglades presented certain challenges for Anna Mistele '19, as both brothers – Matt Mistele '13 and John Mistele '17 – were valedictorians of their respective RE classes. Though determined to chart her own course, Anna Mistele also hoped to make the Mistele clan three for three in valedictory addresses.
In mid-April, she learned she had completed the extraordinary sibling sweep, earning valedictorian honors for the Class of 2019. Valeria Vela '19 was named salutatorian.

"I was hoping to do as well as my brothers, but I didn't necessarily have any expectations," Mistele said. "I'm very excited to make a speech at graduation. It's a little bit intimidating, but I know if I prepare a lot, it will go well. Preparing for things very thoroughly has worked well for me in the past."
The brothers learned of the honor when Anna texted the news to the Mistele family group chat.
"I am so proud of her!" Matt Mistele said. "And I'm happy for the audience at graduation – myself included – now that she is the one giving the speech. Let me tell you, that speech is in good hands."
Added Matt: "She has absolutely thrived in math, physics and computer science at RE. I can't wait to see the contributions she will have to STEM, and the world at large, in the future. Anna, John and I were all inspired by our teachers, our friends, our parents and each other to find meaning in almost everything we learned."
Anna Mistele will address her peers during the commencement on May 24. Vela will speak during the May 19 Senior Send-off. The pair finished at the top of an exceptional RE class. Both are National AP Scholars and National Merit Finalists. They served as president and vice president, respectively, of the RE programming team, and as coaches on the math team (Mistele also served as vice president).
Vela, who is headed to Harvard University in the fall, was a coxswain for the crew team and participated in Breakthrough Miami and Achieve Miami. Mistele, who will attend Stanford University, served as vice president of Women Empowered. Both are members of various honor societies. Anna Mistele also designed a scheduling app called BellBuddy, and helped create a children's book to teach kids about economics.
"Her grades are obviously stellar, but this is not what drives Anna – never have I seen the phrase 'a love for learning' more accurately applied," said her advisor Greg Cooper, also Dean of the Senior Class. "She is also a wonderfully caring, empathetic, and friendly citizen of our community."
Perhaps not surprisingly, Mistele will join her brothers when she arrives to Stanford; Matt Mistele is working on his master's degree in computer science after earning his BA in mathematical and computational science. John is studying mathematics.
"I'm super happy," John Mistele said from Palo Alto, Calif. "I'm proud of her accomplishments and I can't wait to see her graduate. She's the coolest little sister I could've asked for."
