STEM Center building 'up' to begin

The team leading the construction of the new STEM Center clinked glasses of sparkling apple juice and celebrated on April 24 after learning the City of Miami had granted the master building permit, a significant milestone that will allow above-the-ground construction to commence. After weeks of laying the building's foundation, workers will soon begin building up to complete the project.
The projected end date is early 2020. The STEM Center, which will sit across a new quad from the Visual Arts Building, will offer 45,000 sq. ft. of flexible learning space designed to foster collaboration, cross-disciplinary work and creative thinking. It will include classrooms, a fabrication lab, maker lab and a reconfigurable multi-purpose room. It will also be a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certified structure, with solar panels, a rooftop outdoor lab and other sustainability features.

RE's construction team includes representatives from Perkins+Will, Development Service Solutions, Shawmut Design and Construction, Miller Legg and The Permit Doctor. RE Chair of the Board Andy Ansin '81 and Building and Grounds Chair Randy Gumenick have worked tirelessly on the project with the support of Head of School Penny Townsend.

In recent weeks, workers have poured foundation, installed plumbing and air conditioning and done waterproofing. RE students and faculty have been able to observe the foundation work by peering through the windows of adjacent Cameron Hall.
