MS band pays tribute to RE teachers and other legends
The Middle School Band concluded its year with a rousing tribute concert on May 9 at Swenson Hall that highlighted noteworthy people in music, history – and at the RE Middle School. The concert entitled "Heroes, Leaders and Legends" featured a piece dedicated to Assistant Head of the Middle School Shelly Stamler, who is retiring this year, and another that included the participation of longtime math teacher Ginny Onorati who played – fittingly – the triangle. The symphonic band paid homage to Stamler, who has served as an English teacher, academic dean or assistant head for 16 years and is parent to Marissa Canida '06 and Sarah Stamler Serviansky '01, with selections from The Music Man. The band honored Onorati by accompanying her in "Triangle Time" by Timothy Loest. Faculty member Josh D'Alemberte appeared as Abraham Lincoln, reading from The Gettysburg Address to accompany a piece by Michael Story played by the concert band.
Middle School Band Director Cathi Leibinger offered a special welcome to the 12 incoming sixth graders who were in the audience by inviting each to walk across the stage. She also said a sweet goodbye to her departing eighth graders, summoning each to the front of the stage for a personal letter and pin. They presented her with a bouquet of flowers.
The program included the song "Live On," a tribute to Linda Louise Mann, past-president of the Florida Bandmasters Association who died in February 2017, and the night concluded with a "A Song for Friends" by Larry Daehn, which featured all three bands on stage together.
