RE faculty are big fish at REEF
RE faculty members schooled their competitors in the main event at the 2019 Ransom Everglades Epic Fishing tournament on May 11, hauling in the biggest individual dolphin and largest trio of dolphin. On a boat sponsored by trustee Jeffrey Miller '79, physics teacher Luis Felipe snagged an 18.2-lb. dolphin to win the day's biggest prize, and Felipe and his faculty fishing partners also claimed the team award for their 30-lb. trio. Preston Grossfeld, son of Kevin Grossfeld '95, won top honors for heaviest individual non-dolphin with his 29-lb. tuna, and Annika Gelber '23, daughter of Adam Gelber '88, claimed the award for best Lady Angler with her 4.4-lb. catch. Jack Pollack, son of Brian Pollack, won the Junior Angler title with his 8.2-lb. catch.
Tony Mercadal, the Director of Advancement Services, helped the "Miller Faculty" boat bring home the team prize with his 11.8-lb. dolphin, the second-biggest of the day.
The tournament, in its eighth year, serves as a fundraiser for RE's waterfront and Breakthrough Miami, as it brings members of the RE community together on Biscayne Bay. Peter Diamond '92, Elana Oberstein-Harris '93, Pearce Klevan '97 and Grossfeld were tournament chairs; Andy Ansin '81 and Miller served as honorary tournament chairs.
Head of School Penny Townsend participated by going out on the committee boat, enjoying the excitement of the shotgun start. Twenty-three boats competed.
