REclaiming the oar

A standing-room-only crowd jammed Robert E. Walker Field and lined the Ansin Pool deck to watch Ransom Everglades varsity football team defeat Palmer Trinity 30-0 on Sept. 13 in the traditional “Battle for the Oar” game. Students – many in “REclaim the Oar” T-shirts – showed up in droves and joined alumni, parents and faculty to cheer on the Raiders during their lightning-delayed victory.

Many also came early for girls’ junior varsity and varsity volleyball games against Gulliver Prep, which helped conclude a spirited week for RE fall sports teams. The annual contest against Palmer Trinity took on special significance because in 2018 the Raiders lost the oar – which is painted with the scores of all of the games dating back to 1974 – after a 14-year stretch of possession.

The victory on RivalRE night also helped the football team to an undefeated start in 2019 – 5-0 including games through Sept. 27. In the Battle for the Oar contest, quarterback Thomas Schein '21 threw four touchdown passes and led the Raiders in rushing and passing, and Walker White '21 and Robbie Moret '20 each caught two touchdowns. Steven Garrett '20 and Thomas Heisel '21 led in tackles, and Jack Prio Touzet '20 had the sack that led to the Raiders' opening score, a safety.

Students and alumni showed spirit throughout the week. The upper school Spirit Club organized a pep rally in the Anderson gymnasium during a Tuesday assembly. RE’s alumni association distributed “REclaim the Oar” T-shirts on RivalRE morning. Head of School Penny Townsend and her sophomore advisory worked the concession stand during the football game, generating some $1,000 in proceeds for St. Alban’s Day.
