College counselors advise sophomore parents
RE's college counseling office advised sophomore parents on the nuts and bolts of the college process during a Nov. 25 meeting at the Lewis Family Auditorium, the latest in a series of events and programming designed to ready upper school families for the college road ahead.
Dozens of parents attended the event and heard from Director of College Counseling Claudia Jolivert, Senior Associate Director Daniel Creasy and Associate Director Aleny Garcia. That trio provided an overview of the process, discussed standardized testing and course selection, took questions and offered tips on what families could do through the summer of 2020 to help their sophomores.
RE's counseling team emphasized that the sophomore year offered a chance for students to explore their academic and extracurricular interests, and begin pondering a wide range of possible college destinations. They urged families to start thinking about the "Why" and "What" before the "Where" as it pertains to the college search, and encouraged parents to begin visiting colleges, casting a wide net to help students get an early feel for campus preferences.
The event followed a number of fall college counseling events. In October, the director of financial aid at Davidson College offered RE parents a primer on college financial aid; RE alumni participated in a mock interview day for seniors; and admission officials from eight colleges or universities participated in an RE round-table on the college admission process.
On Dec. 10, Roger Caron, the Coordinator of Student-Athlete College Recruitment, will offer advice to student-athletes and their families at 7 p.m. at the Lewis Family Auditorium. All are welcome to attend Athletic Recruitment Night. January will bring the annual College Admission Symposium (Jan. 11) and a freshmen parents night (Jan. 28).
RE seniors met with the college counseling team and Senior Class Dean Greg Cooper on Dec. 2 to discuss how to manage the release of college admission decisions.

The college counseling office is partnering with sophomore advisories to offer a contact point for 10th graders until college counselors are assigned during the junior year. They also urged families to take advantage of the college counseling Resources page on myCOMPASS, which has a new section dedicated to sophomores.
