RE's sailing team wins national title

Ransom Everglades' sailing team claimed the victor's cup – The Mendleblatt Trophy – in the national championships of scholastic keelboat racing, a remarkable outcome in the school's first appearance in the event. Stephan Baker '22, Lachlain McGranahan '20, Louis La Fontisse '21 and Nicolas Echarte '21, under the direction of coach Joe Logan, achieved a dominant victory in St. Petersburg, Fla., Dec. 14-15.
At the 2019 Interscholastic Sailing Association Keelboat Invitational, RE's sailors started on top and stayed there, winning six of the 10 legs of racing, and never falling out of first place during the two days of competition. The sailors could have skipped the last two races and still won the event.

The only entrant from Florida, RE topped the field with a score of 23. Mater Dei High of Santa Ana, Calif., finished second with a score of 40, and St. George's School from Middletown, R.I., claimed third place with a 47. Making the result even more impressive: the sailors trained for only a short time in a borrowed keelboat; their sailing experience and talent allowed them to master the craft with little preparation.

The event highlighted what has been a terrific season for RE's sailing program. The Raiders rank first among nearly 30 schools in the South Atlantic Interscholastic Sailing Association in 2019-20, with victories in two of three regional regattas. The team qualified for all four of the sport's national championships for the first time.
