Grove weekend meals program begins

Ransom Everglades volunteers helped distribute weekend food bags to 200 families with children from Frances S. Tucker Elementary and other parts of Coconut Grove on May 1, launching a seven-week program supported by the RE community and organized with help from City of Miami Commissioner Ken Russell and leaders at the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church.
The bags contained enough food to feed a family of four for a weekend: eggs, bread, rice, beans, pasta, pasta sauce, tuna and chicken, fresh fruit and vegetables, snacks and other items. RE is committed to providing the meals, which provide a supplement to lunches offered during the week by Miami-Dade Public Schools, through June 15. Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, which sits across the street from Tucker, offered its parking lot for distribution of the food.

Ransom Everglades Parents' Association President Nicole Murray organized a small number of volunteers – wearing masks and abiding by social distancing rules – to pack the bags in the upper school dining hall and others to hand out the items as Coconut Grove residents drove through the church parking lot. Head of School Penny Townsend and faculty members Corinne Rhyner, Shellie Perdigon and Abby Berler assisted the parent volunteers.

The initiative was proposed by Commissioner Russell, whose office has sought to ensure that families throughout Coconut Grove get the help they need during the COVID-19 crisis. Many RE alumni and parents have stepped up to support this initiative. If you interesting in sponsoring some meals, you may make a donation here.
