RE hosts Miami Youth Climate Summit
Ransom Everglades served as the virtual host of the Miami Youth Climate Summit that took place on March 6, using the Fernandez STEM center as broadcasting headquarters for the one-day event that drew 1175 registrants from six continents, 22 countries and 18 states. A number of RE students and faculty member Kelly Jackson helped plan and run the event, which featured keynote addresses by Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and youth climate activist Delaney Reynolds.
The third annual summit for middle and high school students featured a variety of talks from prominent speakers throughout the day. National Geographic explorer and University of Miami professor Kenny Broad '84, also an RE parent, spoke about "Exploring the Invisible: Climate, Caves, and Our Water." His wife and fellow scientist Amy Clement participated in a panel discussion of "Sustainable Practices and Climate Engagement." RE parent Spencer Crowley led a workshop entitled, "WRAP: A Vision for Sustainable Waterway Access."
The goal of the summit is to inform attendees about environmental issues and inspire them to take action by demonstrating that effective activism isn't limited by age.
RE students Will Charouhis '24, Madison Munroe '22 and Clara Villalba '22 participated in live segments. A number of other RE students served as Miami Youth Climate Summit Student Leadership Board Members: Charouhis, Maxwell Feinberg '21, Villalba, Sophia Capote '22, Peter Mendiola '21, Mia Bouyoucef '25, Kelli Miller '21, Sofia Martin '25 and Munroe.
Linda Lawrence, RE's Chief Technology Officer, and RE technology team members Quinn Donoho and J.T. Cowgill ensured that the event ran smoothly. Students from Palmer Trinity, Gulliver Prep, TERRA Environmental Research Institute, Miami Palmetto Senior High, Miami Palmetto Middle, Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart, M.A.S.T. @ Homestead and George Washington Carver Middle School also helped make the event a success, along with additional faculty advisors from those schools.
