Five teams advance to robotics worlds

Three upper school robotics teams and two from the middle school earned invitations to 2021 robotics world championships with stellar performances at recent events. At the South Florida VEX Robotics Competition High School Regional Championships in Naples on April 18, RE’s all-sophomore “The Squad” team – Luca Trebotich ’23, Diego de Lope ’23, Victor Perez ’23, Pablo Rodriguez-Russowsky '23 and Lucia Rose Dahn ’23 – qualified for worlds by winning the event’s highest honor: the prestigious Excellence Award.
The Excellence Award takes into consideration a team’s skills, tournament play, judges’ interviews and engineering notebook. At the same event, RE’s “Dark Matter” team of Dashiell DeStefano ’22, Jonah Bennett ’21, Max Vallone ’22, Jordan Hoffman ’21, Sofia Miranda ’23, Alex Van Lidth ’22 and Andre Joseph ’22 posted a 7-0 record and won the Think Award, which rewards programming skill; and the school’s “The Matrix” team of Joshua Buttrick ’22, Arjun Badwal ’23, Charlotte Wang ’21, Joan Joseph ’21 and Emma G ’23 was recognized as a tournament finalist. Both earned world championship bids.

The middle school team "2045R" – Joey Buttrick, Mateo Heitner and Victoria Pinilla – earned the Amaze Award at the April 16 South Florida Middle School VEX IQ Remote Championship, also earning a world championship invite. The team of Angelo Perez, Eduardo de Sabrit, Tino Pena and Ryan Alesandro qualified for world based on their cumulative "skills score" throughout the season.
