RE sailors excel in two regional championships

Under coach Joe Logan, RE sailors had an amazing two weeks: On April 17-18, Stephan Baker '22 won the SAISA District Singlehanded Championship in Jacksonville, defeating 36 of the best singlehanded sailors in the Southeast. On May 1-2, the RE sailing team earned a berth in the prestigious national team race championships – which will take place May 22-23 at Ransom Everglades – with its performance at the district team race championships.
The singlehanded event was only the second regatta for Baker in that boat class. Jackson McAliley ’23 finished sixth overall. Five RE sailors participated in the weather-shortened championship; 15 races were planned for the weekend but only three were completed due to relentless rain and very little wind. RE co-captain Javi Garcon ’21 finished first and second in two of the three races, but a premature start cost him points in the third, and he ended up ninth overall. Emery Diemar ’24 and Boris Bialer ’22 also competed for RE.

Two weeks later, Ransom Everglades hosted the South Atlantic Interscholastic Sailing Association District Team Race Championships, which brought together six teams from the southeast region. RE and the Antilles School from the U.S. Virgin Islands each finished with a racing record of eight wins and two losses; the Antilles School edged RE for first place in the tiebreaker. Both schools advanced to the Interscholastic Sailing Association Baker Team Race Championships.
