First RE chess tournament draws a crowd

Ransom Everglades' first RE chess tournament on May 15 crowned a sixth grader – Chris Page '27 – as its champion, and it provided an entertaining test for RE's nationally ranked chess star Nikhil Kumar '22. Kumar did not officially compete in the event because of his stature, but he played all 25 participants simultaneously for fun – and won all 25 matches. In the individual competition, Ryan Berkshire '23 and Lucas Civantos '24 finished second and third, respectively.
The first-time event at Ransom Everglades took place on the Touzet Quad in front of the Fernandez STEM center. Only open to RE students, the event was organized by chess team faculty advisor Luis Felipe and Kumar, who is ranked seventh among players age 16 in the United States, and at age 12 won a junior world chess title.

The event drew middle and upper school students who each played five rounds of chess. Page won all five of his matches; Berkshire and Civantos won four each, both falling only to Page. Facilities team member Andres Sequeiro, a top chess player himself, assisted with the event.

Ransom Everglades plans three such events next year, including an invitational with other schools in the winter.
