Another RE student wins scientific recognition

Another Ransom Everglades student won recognition from the Federation of Analytical Chemistry and Spectroscopy Societies for work on a scientific poster. James Brown Urmeneta '24, the lead author and presenter on a poster describing a new technique for measuring cobalt in aqueous solutions, received a monetary award from the federation. Brown Urmeneta, who collaborated with Ella Lombardo '24 and Max Vallone '22, presented the poster at the Federation of Analytical Chemistry and Spectroscopy Societies SciX 2021 symposium in Providence, R.I., on September 26.
The students are members of the Young REsearchers Program, which is directed by faculty member Claudia Ochatt. The trio devised a new technique to lower the sensitivity of detection a million times by using a novel spectrophotometric method in semifluid resins. Brown-Urmeneta learned of the award for the poster, "Programmable Motorized-LIBS Enhances Detection of Aqueous Cobalt(II)," in late October 2021.

At the SciX 2021 symposium, Vallone won one of three major awards; he was the lead author on two posters and collaborated on all seven RE entries.
