Diversity Council leaders share SDLC experiences

Members of RE’s Diversity Council participated in a panel discussion about what they learned at Student Diversity Leadership Conferences (SDLCs) sponsored by the National Association of Independent Schools in 2019, 2020 or 2021. During the roundtable on the Lewis Family Auditorium stage on January 11, the student leaders explained how they benefited from affinity group meetings and other sessions and urged their peers to consider applying for RE’s Diversity Council in the spring.
Inceni Cabrera ’22, Martin Jaramillo ’22, Vicky Porto ’22, Katya Sucher ’22 and Izzy Virtue ’22 attended the online SDLC November 29-December 3. Panelists Branden Cabrera ’23, Phillip Craft ’22, Andre Joseph ’22, Dominique Smith ’22, Karyna Steele ’23 and Kerryn Xu ’22 attended in 2019 or 2020. Diversity Council advisors Jeannine Lehr, Wendell Graham '74 and Carla Hill have also attended.

The SDLC, in its 28th year, is a multiracial, multicultural gathering of upper school student leaders from across the United States and abroad. The conference is led by a diverse team of trained adult and peer facilitators and focuses on self-reflecting, forming allies and building community.
