Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service at RE
Dozens of Ransom Everglades' students, faculty and staff celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day by joining in service activities on both campuses. Members of the RE community cleaned trash and debris from the mangroves; sewed dresses and shirts for children in Haiti; created plastic yarn to make mats for people who are homeless; packed care packages for a homeless shelter; and collected food for a local church's food bank. All of the activities were voluntary; it was a day off from classes.
Faculty members/administrators Doreen Johnson, Wendell Graham '74, Richie Fredericks, Kelly Jackson, Scott Erdmann and Corinne Rhyner helped organize the event, and many including Head of School Penny Townsend participated.
The day began at the middle school with a collection and delivery of food items for the Greater St. Paul AME Church, which operates a food pantry for the underserved in Coconut Grove. Students and faculty also gathered on the Everglades Campus to sew shirts and dresses with RE's Little Dresses and Shirts for Haiti club and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
At the upper school, students and faculty assembled under the direction of CREate for a Cause on the Miller Quad to make donated plastic bags into "plarn," which would be later used to create mats for homeless people, and pack nearly 80 toiletry care packages for a local homeless shelter. About five dozen students also grabbed gloves and garbage bags and scoured the mangroves along the edge of the school's property with the student-led Environmental and Sustainability Council, collecting hundreds of pounds of debris and trash.

Founded in 1903, Ransom Everglades School is a coeducational, college preparatory day school for grades 6 - 12 located on two campuses in Coconut Grove, Florida.
