Celebrating the Chinese New Year

A professional Chinese dance troupe performed at assembly and upper school students took part in a range of traditional Chinese activities during the mid-day break on February 1 in celebration of the Chinese New Year. The festivities, planned and carried out by the school’s Chinese Culture Club, were designed to be educational, engaging and fun.
Club leaders Yara Haddad ’22 and Sabrina Soto ’22 introduced the Chinese Performing Arts Group of South Florida, the day’s keynote performers. Dancers demonstrated a long silk ribbon dance, a Mongolian dance and a fan dance. A musician also performed a Guzheng solo on a 21-string ancient harp on the Lewis Family Auditorium stage. Students clapped along and responded with rousing ovations.

Later, students participated in tea tasting, candy tasting, calligraphy and line dancing in the Miller Quad. Chinese teacher Xiaohong Teng helped orchestrate the events.
