Students, parents attend College Counseling Case Study Night

College admissions officers from ten colleges and universities came to Ransom Everglades on April 11 to lead the College Counseling Case Study Night, an annual event that takes RE families behind the scenes in a simulated college admission selection committee process. More than 200 people attended the April 11 event at the upper school, working in small groups with representatives from Case Western Reserve University, Colorado College, Denison University, Florida State University, Fordham University, Johns Hopkins University, Purdue University, University of Miami, University of Richmond and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
Tenth- and 11th-grade students and parents were divided in small groups, each led by an admissions officer, and were asked to review the application files of four different students who had applied for admission to the fictitious Wallace College.

After discussing the various components of a file (school profile, strength of program, grades, test scores, race and ethnicity, legacy, extracurricular activities, socio-economic background, essays, and recommendations), each group was then asked to admit one student; to place one student on a waiting list; and to deny two students. Spirited discussions ensued.

Each group then returned to the Lewis Family Auditorium where the college admission officials shared each group's decisions with everyone and explained why they made their specific decision. As expected, not each group made the same decisions. The entire group was then asked to vote on each student – first to admit one; then to waitlist one; with the other two subsequently denied.

This instructive evening gave students and families a first-hand glimpse into the difficult and nuanced decisions that college admissions officers have to make in their work. RE's college counseling office led by interim director Terry Giffen was on hand to facilitate the event.
