Alumni put hammer down in REEF
A trio of alumni put the hammer down (in a boat fittingly named "Hammer Down") at the Tenth Annual Ransom Everglades Epic Fishing (REEF) tournament on May 7, dominating in the team fishing event that is the centerpiece of the annual fishing fundraiser. Jose Arguelles '96, Peter Mekras '97, Louis Moll '97, John Mekras and Danny Ramos caught three dolphin that weighed in at 38.2 pounds, surpassing the 20.2 pound haul brought in by the second-place team that included Chris Malek '02. Other highlights of the fishing-fest that begins with a shotgun start in Biscayne Bay at dawn: Pia Drulard '24, Lauren Page '24 and Heidi Mason '96 won the lady angler competition, as Lee Harper '29, Dexter Falk '28 and Jack Herrera won the junior angler event.
Ramos (20.4 pounds) and Mike Sproul (15.4) scored the largest individual dolphin, with Arguellas right behind with his 14.0 pound catch. Julian Fundora landed a 24.0 pound tuna to win the heaviest non-dolphin category, with Anthony Abinador '13 in second place with a 21.4 pound kingfish and Tyler Grossfeld '27 in third place with his 16.0 pound tuna.
After the event, anglers gathered on the Ransom Everglades waterfront for fresh fish tacos prepared by Sage Dining's Alfredo Silva and his team.
