RE welcomes parents for back-to-school nights
Ransom Everglades leaders welcomed parents back to campus as faculty members wowed them in the classroom during the first in-person back-to-school nights in three years. Hundreds attended the Middle School Back-to-School Night Sept. 8 and the Upper School Back-to-School Night on Sept. 15, even though rain pelted both campuses shortly before the events began.
At both events, parents attended an assembly with school leaders before proceeding to their child's advisory and attending 10-minute versions of each class. Between classes or during free periods, they had opportunities to meet with technology services staff, mingle with school deans, directors and leaders, and sample hors d'oeuvres provided by SAGE Dining Services.
During the opening assembly at the middle school, parents heard from Head of the Middle School Eric Boberg, Interim Head of School Rachel Rodriguez, Vice-Chair of the Board of Trustees Elana Oberstein-Harris '93 and COO and Interim Head of the Upper School David Clark '86. At the upper school, they heard from Clark, Rodriguez, Associate Head of School John A. King Jr. and Chair of the Board of Trustees Jonathan Fitzpatrick.
"Ransom Everglades is more than a great institution," Fitzpatrick said. "It's an incredibly important part of the fabric of the City of Miami ... What Rachel and John and David and I talk about is bringing joy back to this institution. It's pretty cool when joy is a strategy; this is on top of our usual board priorities."
Added Fitzpatrick: "The board of trustees has never been more optimistic about this incredible institution, and you have our promise and commitment that we will do everything in our power to keep it that way for decades."
Oberstein-Harris, whose mother taught at Ransom Everglades for 23 years, concluded her remarks by offering praise for RE's faculty.
"I want to recognize and thank the faculty who will blow you away tonight," she said. "They enrich our children each and every day, in and out of the classroom. What they are doing is cultivating citizens ... who will put more into the world than they take from it."
