RE community joins MLK Day of Service

More than 175 members of the RE community and friends joined Ransom Everglades' annual day of service on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, making dresses and shirts for children in Haiti, packing meals for local food banks and picking trash from the mangroves. Students, parents, faculty, administrators and friends arrived to the upper school throughout the day on Jan. 16, participating in the local, international and environmental service projects.
About five dozen volunteers gathered for the Little Dresses and Shirts for Haiti activity, sewing 55 dresses and shirts out of pillowcases and other fabric. Some 55 volunteers simultaneously assembled 8,000 Meals of Hope meals from 800 pounds of beans, chicken, rice and vegetables; the meals were then distributed through Food Rescue U.S. to Lotus House and Miami Rescue Mission. Another 70 people helped collect 346 pounds of trash from the mangroves on RE's waterfront.

The day's events were organized by Middle School Dean of Studies Doreen Johnson, Director of Inclusion and Community Engagement Wendell Graham '74 and Director of Environmental Sustainability Kelly Jackson. Members of RE's faculty, Black Student Association, varsity basketball and soccer teams joined the effort with the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, an international service organization founded at Howard University in 1908.

"Ransom Everglades has embraced the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through its continued service to the community – both local and world," Johnson said, "and our annual day of service demonstrates the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr."
