Chinese-language students spend spring break in Asia
Nineteen students in RE's upper school Chinese classes traveled to Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore during spring break from March 15-25, practicing their Chinese-language skills while immersing themselves in local culture and history and enjoying traditional cuisine. Under world language department chair James Monk and faculty member Xiaohong Teng, the students visited religious sites and museums, sampled street food, explored local neighborhoods and experienced the rhythms of daily life.
In Hong Kong, students visited the Hong Kong Palace Museum, participating in a task-based learning assignment in which they investigated and then presented on various topics in history. They also climbed to "The Big Buddha" and visited the Po Lin Monastery. In Kuala Lumpur, they explored the Petronas Towers, the world's tallest twin skyscrapers, as well as various religious venues including the Masjid Negara (National Mosque). One of the goals of the trip was to learn about how different religions – Islam, Buddhism, Daoism and Hinduism – coexist.
In Singapore, the group visited parks including the National Orchid Garden, the Skypark Observation Deck of the Marina Bay Sands Hotel, the Singapore City Gallery, various temples and a few hawker centres (i.e., large food courts). Students in RE's Chinese 3 and higher were eligible for the trip, the world language department's first class trip to Asia since before the pandemic. The attendees:
