Seventh grader wins state championship in chess

Nikhil Kumar '21 claimed the state title at the 2016 Florida State Scholastic Championship in chess March 12-13, advancing as Florida's middle-school representative to the national scholastic chess championship in Indianapolis in August.
Kumar topped 76 middle-school students at the event in Orlando, which drew 440 students from across the state, winning a bid to the Barber Tournament of K-8 Champions July 30-Aug. 2. Kumar, the top-ranked chess player in his age group in Florida and 13th in the nation, will also compete at the U.S. Open immediately following the Barber event in Indianapolis Aug. 3-7.
 
Kumar's U.S. Chess Federation rating increased at the event from 2071 to 2084, making him an "expert" level chess player. He is currently ranked 77th among players of any age in the state of Florida.
