"Understanding Approaches to Global Health Equity”
Katie Kralievits '09 urged RE students to do something about the disparity in healthcare that exists around the world during a talk on March 29, 2016, investing their efforts in substantive programs rather than short-term relief efforts that often have little impact.
Kralievits is a research assistant to Dr. Paul Farmer at the Boston-based Partners in Health, a medical non-profit that partners with local organizations and ministries of health in 10 countries to provide quality healthcare to those living in poverty. "I think we can all agree Katie is living Paul Ransom's mission," Head of School Penny Townsend said. "We know access to good health is one of the biggest challenges in the world."

A 2013 graduate of Notre Dame with a master's degree in global health, Kralievits spent a year in Zambia working for Catholic Relief Services. She noted that, while short trips to impoverished nations as part of humanitarian efforts may seem noble, they often accomplish little. She encouraged students to seek ventures founded on the four S's – sufficient staff; necessary stuff; safe and sterile spaces; and strong systems.
Just as important, she said, was having the right mindset. She urged students to hone a sense of cultural humility, recognizing that they would never be completely culturally competent. And she encouraged them to walk with people, rather than just providing aid.
"In a global health setting, we need to accompany those with whom we work," she said.
