RE honors top teams, athletes, coaches

Ransom Everglades honored its top teams, coaches and athletes at the 2016-17 varsity athletics awards ceremony at the Lewis Family Auditorium on May 15, and offered special recognition to retiring baseball coach Steve Howlan. Photo Gallery

Interim Athletic Director Andy De Angulo served as emcee, distributing major awards to more than two dozen teams and athletes at the event that drew hundreds of students and their parents. He opened the night by recognizing the 17 athletes who have agreed to play sports in college. Those athletes signed ceremonial or formal letters of intent.

The bulk of the evening was spent celebrating the year's biggest successes on RE's playing fields, courts, bay and pools. The boys' state-champion tennis and water polo teams shared the Team of the Year honors with the sailing team. Michael Colonna '17 and Debbie Ajagbe '17 won Athlete of the Year honors, and Anne Gutierrez '17 and John Mistele '17 were named Scholar Athletes of the Year.

The night concluded with a special presentation from cross country coach Doc Crabtree to Howlan, who has stepped down from coaching after 30 years at RE. The evening also featured videos for each athletics season – fall, winter and spring – compiled by photographer Carl Kafka, a former RE parent who has chronicled RE's athletics achievements for years.
