RE swimmers dominate district meet

RE's girls' swimming team won its 12th district title in a row and the boys' team claimed its fourth consecutive victory as both squads dominated the Florida High School Athletic Association Class 1A-12 championships at the Ansin Aquatic Center Oct. 18. Raider swimmers combined to win six events at the meet, which included 13 schools.
Felipe Urrutia '18 won the boys' 200-yard individual medley (2 minutes, 0.4 seconds) and 100 breaststroke (1:04.01); and Kathleen Hutchinson '18 won the girls' 500 freestyle (5:49.04). The Raider girls' team tallied 451 points, topping second-place Miami Country Day (269) and third-place Carrollton (230). The boys accrued 406 points to top Riviera Prep (318) and Miami Country Day (271).

RE swimmers won three freestyle relays: the girls' 200 (Hutchinson, Caliste Skouras '19, Georgia Murphy '21 and Ande Edmunds '18) in 1:47.79; the girls' 400 (Edmunds, Skouras, Hutchinson and Mattie Barfield '21) in 3:53.32; and the boys' 400 (Matt Simko '18, Tomas Gomez '18, Urrutia and Joshua Angel '18) in 3:30.81.

A host of Raiders earned top-three finishes:

Shuli Rosenfeld '21, Emanuelle Dooreck-Aloni '20, Murphy and Sarah Mesa '20 finished second in the girls' 200 medley relay; Hutchinson and Murphy earned second and third, respectively, in the girls' 200 free; Barfield got second in the girls 200 individual medley; Gomez and Simko scored second and third, respectively, in the boys' 50 free; Skouras got second in the girls' 100 free; Jake Pearson '18 earned second in the boys' 500 free; Merlin Plant '20 got second in the 100 breast; Simko, Urrutia, Plant and Gomez earned second in the 200 free relay; and Barfield placed third in the girls' 100 backstroke.

Both squads are coached by Interim Athletic Director Andy De Angulo.
