Make-up app wins RE Business Challenge
A plan to connect aspiring make-up artists to young women in Miami seeking inexpensive makeovers netted Arianna Gonzalez '19 and Maia Mora '19 first place in the Ransom Everglades Business Plan Challenge on March 8. The pair's Glow Up app topped a field of five business-plan finalists who wowed an enthusiastic audience and three alumni judges at the Pagoda.
With the victory, Gonzalez and Mora advanced to the Innovate South Florida 2018 High School Business Plan Competition on April 11 at Miami Dade College. All of the finalists will also enter the Miami Herald's annual business plan challenge.
Zeke Andreassen '18, Nikki Jagid '19 and Anna Mistele '18 finished second with Zzzoo, their app to help young people avoid sleep debt by making sure their virtual animals stay healthy. Becca Hadwen '18 and Cynthia Jelke '19 earned third place with R1: an inclusive clothing line that caters to a market for gender-flexible clothing.

Josh Abrams and David Goldstein presented their Volunteer Miami app, which connects volunteers with non-profits in need of support; and Sophia Elliot and Jake Weintraub showcased their transformative app, myVote, which aims to increase voter participation and awareness.
The students have been guided by AP Macro/Microeconomics teacher Jen Nero, who introduced the event along with RE parent Richard Jackson. Jackson chairs the advisory board for Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship, which founded the Innovate South Florida competition. Each team had seven to 10 minutes to present its plan, followed by five minutes of questions from the judging panel: attorney Mike Greenberg '79, Remzy.com founder David Harris '95 and The LAB Miami co-founder Wifredo Fernandez '05.
