Miami Waterkeeper trains RE students

Student members of a new water patrol program gathered for classroom training on September 15 to prepare for monthly boat patrols of local waterways. The effort is led by Miami Waterkeeper, a Miami-based non-profit dedicated to protecting Biscayne Bay and the surrounding watershed. The organization is also using a lab at the Upper School to do weekly testing of bay waters.
Miami Waterkeeper’s water patrol program trains volunteers to observe, document, and report issues that they may encounter on the water. Several RE students are also participating in the Miami Waterkeeper’s Junior Ambassador environmental leadership training program this semester.
 
"We are thrilled to partner with Ransom Everglades for this important new series of programs,” said Rachel Silverstein, executive director of Miami Waterkeeper. “We will cover science, policy, leadership, boat skills and personal responsibility. We are excited to work with the incredible students, staff and faculty to cultivate a new generation of informed and empowered stewards."
 
Forty-five students ranging from sixth to 10th grades participated in the first training under Miami Waterkeeper staff, including Emily Hernandez ’13, an operations coordinator who started with the organization as a summer intern in 2017. RE faculty members Kelly Jackson, Kristine Stump and Corie Charpentier have spearheaded the effort on RE’s campuses. Other science faculty including Head of the Upper School Ken Mills, Scott Erdmann, Brooke Gintert, Alexandra Gunner and Doug Heller ’80 have assisted.
 
RE’s water patrol program will allow students to join monthly boat patrols of the local waterways. Results of bay-water testing will be publicly available on Miami Waterkeeper's free "Swim Guide" app.
