RE peer educators kick off health education

More than four dozen RE juniors and seniors launched the 2018-19 Health Information Project at Ransom Everglades on Oct. 18. The junior and senior leaders, known as Peer Health Educators, have undergone training with HIP, a Miami-based health education non-profit that empowers students to take ownership of important health and wellness issues.
RE's Peer Health Educators met with the school's freshman class during the advisory period to present the first of eight teaching modules for the school year. HIP, created in 2009 to improve the student health education model in high schools, offers a student-taught curriculum that covers topics including drugs and alcohol, mental health, sexuality and nutrition. The goal is to promote safe, healthy, informed and thoughtful choices.

HIP, which is currently partnering with 57 other Miami-Dade County public and independent high schools, has provided training for juniors and seniors to assist more than 33,000 ninth-grade students during the 2018-19 school year.

Albert Adatto, a member of the mathematics and computer science faculty, has served since HIP's start at RE as the faculty sponsor. Ilija Wan-Simm '19 is president and Jake Schwartz '19, Margo Squire '19, Joseph Bolduc '19, Maggie McDowell '19 and Nikki Jagid '19 are board members.
