Day on the Bay with Shake-A-Leg
The Class of 2025 participated in the annual Day on the Bay hosted by Shake-A-Leg Miami on Nov. 15. Students had the opportunity to kayak, swim, sail, do a service project at Shake-A-Leg, and, for the first time at RE, participate in #BayDrift, an ocean current study with the University of Miami's CARTHE Research Group (Consortium for Advanced Research on the Transport of Hydrocarbon in the Environment).
Bay Drift was first developed by CARTHE, Vizcaya, and Frost Science and now has 14 organizations and dozens of schools involved. RE's sixth-grade students deployed 200 drift cards and one GPS drifter into Biscayne Bay as part of the Bay Drift program. The purpose of #BayDrift is to deploy, capture and analyze data collected by the drift cards as well as CARTHE’s custom, GPS-equipped, biodegradable, ocean surface drifters to understand Miami's ocean currents, specifically in Biscayne Bay.
Before the Day on the Bay, Laura Bracken Chaibongsai, the program and outreach manager at the University of Miami/CARTHE, spoke to the sixth-grade class about #BayDrift and the importance of studying ocean currents. Drift cards were then decorated in all Earth Science classes. Recovered drift cards will be reported to the University of Miami. Students have been tracking the GPS drifter in their science classes – they can follow its journey and make predictions about where it will go next.
While the sixth grade enjoyed the Day on the Bay, the seventh-grade class visited Florida International University's Biscayne Bay Campus to participate in its ropes course, a popular spot for experiential learning and team building. The eighth grade, meanwhile, participated in the annual Inward Bound program, a day of self-reflection, personal growth and bonding designed to help students prepare for their ninth-grade Outward Bound trip to the Everglades.
