Senior wins Hispanic Heritage Youth Award
Sofia Andrade '19 was named a 2018 recipient of a Hispanic Heritage Youth Award in part for her summer work as a Dan Leslie Bowden Fellow in the Humanities. The bronze-medal recognition in the Business & Entrepreneurship category was announced at Miami Dade College on Dec. 6. She is one of just 180 students nationwide of the more than 13,000 that applied to claim one of the awards, which are being distributed at 10 events in November and December throughout the United States. The Hispanic Heritage Youth Award program is in its 20th year.
Andrade, who was also lauded for her work with Inklings and the Catalyst, used her Bowden fellowship to travel to Somerset County, Pa., to document the plight of coal miners and others affected by the coal industry. She shared her findings on a video and website. Andrade, who was honored along with 18 other students from Florida, will receive a $1,000 grant and was invited to join the Latinos On the Fast Track (LOFT) Network, which provides access to 100,000 other students and professionals and provide access to other resources.
