Speech and debate earns podium finishes

RE’s speech and debate students claimed a dozen podium finishes at a pair of end-of-year South Florida Catholic Forensic League events, and distinguished themselves at the highly competitive 2019 Sunvitational, a Jan. 11-13 tournament in Fort Lauderdale that attracted teams from around the nation.
At the Sunvitational at the NSU University School, nine of RE’s 12 entrants broke into elimination rounds and Megan Houchin '19 earned fifth in Informative Speaking. With their performances, Houchin, Marley Rywell '19Brianna Kerr '19, Oliver Stern '19 and Dori Schurr '20 earned bids to the prestigious Tournament of Champions national event in April in Lexington, Kentucky.

At the CFL #3, Juju Simoes '22 placed first in Dramatic Performance. Clara Villalba '22 placed third in Extemporaneous Speaking. Georgia Crosby '21 and Alex Dray '21 placed first and second, respectively, in Informative Speaking. Team president Ilija Wan-Simm '19 placed second in Program of Interpretation. In debate events, the teams of Andre Joseph '22 and Nicole Rodriguez '22, and Jackson Mopsick '21 and Sophia Rubenstein '22 went undefeated in Novice Public Forum, placing first and second, respectively. In Varsity Public Forum Zach Marcus '22 and Rywell went undefeated and placed second.

At the CFL #2 in Miramar, Jake Schwartz ‘19 and Thomas Murphy ‘19 placed first in Varsity Public Forum. In individual events, Danny Jackson '21 placed first in Dramatic Performance. Dina Kaplan ‘22 placed first in Novice Student Congress, and Luca Campiani ‘22 placed third in Novice Student Congress.
