Two district titles in one day for swimming

Ransom Everglades landed two district championships in one day as both the boys' and girls' swim teams successfully defended their titles at the 2016 Florida High School Athletic Association 1A District 12 Championship at the Ansin Pool Oct. 25. For the girls, it was their 11th straight title under RE swim coach Andy De Angulo; for the boys, it was the third in a row.
RE's girls tallied 393 points to top Westminster Christian (273), Miami Country Day (231) and Carrollton (227) in a field of 12 schools. The boys scored 529 to beat Miami Country Day (369.5), Riviera Prep (243) and Coral Shores (188.5) in the 12-team field.

Ransom Everglades swimmers won nine events, including all four freestyle relays. Kyla Valls '17 claimed the girls' 200-yard freestyle (1 minute, 50.06 seconds) and 100 free (51.07). Mati Junghahn '17 won the 200 individual medley (2:09.54); Felipe Urrutia '18 won the 500 free (4:53.12); Jason Perez '17, the 100 backstroke (59.13).

Valls, Camryn Grussmark '17, Mattie Barfield '21 and Ande Edmunds '18 won the girls' 200 free relay in 1:44.32; Paul Kalandiak '17, Tomas Gomez '18, Perez and Matthew Simko '18 won the boys' 200 free relay in 1:33.93; Valls, Grussmark, Barfield and Calliste Skouras '19 claimed the 400 free relay in 3:49.89; and Kalandiak, Simko, Will Danon '17 and Urrutia won the boys' 400 free in 3:29.46.

The dual victories gave Ransom Everglades its third varsity district title this fall; on Oct. 11, the girls' golf team won the Class 1A-24 district championship. The boys' and girls' cross country teams finished second in their districts. The girls' volleyball team lost in the district semifinals. The swimming, cross country and golf teams are continuing in regional and state playoffs.
