Dancers celebrate women's history

The Middle School dance team offered a stirring tribute to women during its spring recital on May 12, performing to a range of female-themed pieces with dance that reflected the style and period. From the unhurried ballet that accompanied Maya Angelou's recitation of her poem "Phenomenal Woman" to the funky romp to Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," the MS dancers showcased decades of girl power.
They also showed off significant growth under director Julie Pappas Smith, who arrived to RE at the start of 2016-17 after serving as a member of the faculty at the Miami City Ballet, the Boston Conservatory of Music (summer) and the University of Miami. The program included ballet, modern, jazz, swing and hip hop, and costumes that enhanced the messaging, from shimmering dresses to pink tutus to sweatpants and sneakers.

The sixth grade danced to "Rosie the Riveter," "Mother's Prayer" and Lauper's piece. The seventh grade performed to Angelou, "Sisters are Doing it for Themselves" and "Beautiful." The eighth grade opened with a reflection on women's suffrage and danced to "Control" and "Think." The entire troupe took bows to Aretha Franklin's "Respect."

Amanda Sotolongo '21 and Nicole Tacher Lois '21 choreographed and performed to "Try," offering a mix of ballet and modern dance. Neely Amdur '21, Grace Arriola '21, Mila Gelles '21 and Daniela Pineros '21 cranked up the excitement with hip hop to "Run the World."
