RE welcomes new middle school families at spring orientation

Director of Admission and Enrollment Management Amy Sayfie Zichella ’93 shared impressive statistics illustrating the diversity of the class: the 168 incoming sixth graders come from 44 elementary schools (21 private, 19 public, four charter) in five states (Florida, New York, Texas and Illinois). The Class of 2031 includes four sets of twins and 12 children of RE alumni. The four new seventh graders and 11 new eighth graders hail from 13 schools in Florida, Ilinois, New York, Canada and India.

Zichella opened the event in Swenson Hall, followed by Head of School Rachel Rodriguez and Head of the Middle School Pete Di Pace.

“Parents, thank you for making the best decision you could make, and for entrusting us with the privilege of educating your children,” Rodriguez said. “We invite you to join us on this journey of growth and discovery, and know that your children are entering a community that will nurture their interests, challenge their assumptions, and – with an incredible faculty – … [we] will inspire your children to be the best versions of themselves.”

Seniors Will Charouhis ’24 and Juliana Perez Rivera ’24 offered advice and inspiration.

Said Perez Rivera, who is heading to Florida State on a Presidential Scholarship: “At Ransom Everglades, I’ve truly felt valued as a member of the community, and I’ve always felt support from my peers, teachers, and administrators when I need it and even when I don’t. This taught me the importance of kindness, being present, support and community … Throughout my years at Ransom, I have seen many positive changes. However, one very consistent thing is our emphasis on honor and excellence. Ransom Everglades believes in students being challenged to think critically, empathetically and creatively. I am surrounded by people who inspire me and who make me want to be a better human, and I have the privilege of being able to learn with them and from them. I have learned so much from this incredible institution.”

Said Charouhis, who is planning to attend Stanford University: “Put all you can into the next seven years; I promise you, it will come back to you 10 times over,” Charouhis said. “There is a part of me that wishes I could turn back time and sit in the seat you are sitting in now with seven years ahead of you and one million moments to craft. So jump in. and try everything. Congratulations to every single one of you. You have earned the right – and the absolute privilege – to be here.”
