Performing Arts

  • ACTING STUDIO 1

    This course serves as an introduction to theater and performance. Students study the various aspects of a complete theatrical production, including acting, sets, costumes, lighting, sound and make-up. Daily acting exercises, participation in theater games and projects make up the majority of the student’s grade. Students also must demonstrate an understanding of basic acting skills and memorization through one monologue performance each semester. Theater etiquette, the audition process, beginning movement, diction and basic stage terms are also covered. Students are required to record significant experiences and reflections in a journal.
  • ACTING STUDIO 2

    This course shifts the focus of the actor from an individual performer to that of an ensemble performer. Students read and analyze various plays, learning how to identify beats, objectives, subtext, obstacles and intention. Daily improvisational exercises, as well as duet and group scene performances, build the student’s confidence, communication and collaboration skills, creativity and critical thinking. Students are expected to evaluate and critique class performances, and also to record significant experiences and reflections in a journal.
  • THEATRE WORKSHOP

    This course is designed to give students an awareness and appreciation of the world of theater. Students research and analyze classic and contemporary practices in theater arts. Basic understanding of stagecraft, acting practices, rehearsal techniques and character development are also covered. Students develop a mastery of theater critique and different theatrical styles. A research project each semester, consisting of an oral presentation, paper and visual aid, assesses the students’ understanding.
  • STAGE PRODUCTION AND DESIGN 1

    Lights, Curtain, Action! RE students are in charge of the show. This course provides a hands-on exploration of technical theater, in which students explore lighting, scenic and sound design, rigging and live video production. Throughout the year, a core group of students from this class will be behind the scenes for school assemblies, selected special events, and a variety of productions from the performing arts department such as musicals, rock concerts and orchestra performances.
  • STAGE PRODUCTION AND DESIGN 2

    In this project-based course, students develop advanced skills in the creative-design aspects of traditional and modern theater, including costuming, sound and Foley design with Adobe Audition, lighting design and the rendering and creation of production sets and props. Beginning with drafting and design work using Vectorworks, students venture across the many layers of technical theater, acquiring the skills to put on a successful production from the development phase to execution. In this hands-on approach to learning the technical aspects of theater, students lead in the design and execution of performing arts productions and varied school-wide events.
  • VOCAL TECHNIQUES AND PERFORMANCE

    Vocal Techniques and Performance offers students who have a passion and talent for singing an opportunity to perform as members of our RE Vocal Ensemble. Vocal ensemble will focus on developing solid vocal technique, musicianship and artistry in various musical styles including Classical, Musical Theater, Pop and Jazz. The objective of this class is to build advanced ensemble techniques and performance skills that will improve the presentation, musical interpretation, and artistry of the student vocalist. The goal of the course is to encourage students to take healthy risks, explore new possibilities in their performances, build expressive communication skills, and analyze and employ the skills and traits that will help them succeed as a more skilled and competent musician. Students in this ensemble will have numerous opportunities to perform throughout the year. Students are encouraged to perform in the Upper School musical and other school events as part of the curriculum for the course. Performances outside of school will serve as experiential learning opportunities in support of the course curriculum. After-school and weekend rehearsals may be required depending on the performance schedule.
  • RE JAZZ SINGERS

    This advanced vocal performance course is devoted to learning from the Great American SongBook; immersive study of jazz, pop and contemporary musical styles.  The course includes vocal technique, performance, lead sheet preparation, interpretation, phrasing and the development of skills in leading and interacting with a rhythm section. The course trains jazz vocal students to develop the aural foundation needed to successfully navigate common jazz melodic, harmonic and rhythmic elements, utilizing numerous exercises focusing on identifying intervals, chord quality, scales, extensions and alterations, common rhythms and meters and chord progression recognition. Students perform multi-voice arrangements in the jazz idiom, including large and small ensembles, in concerts at the end of each semester. Students have additional opportunities to record and perform off campus as well as being a collaborative training ensemble for the Frost School of Music jazz vocal program.
  • SYMPHONIC BAND

    This class provides an opportunity for students to perform a wide variety of band literature. Emphasis is on the development of musical skills and understanding through rehearsal and performance. Solo and ensemble music is studied and performed. Additional emphasis is placed on the development of music-reading skills, phrasing, interpretation, articulation, tone and awareness of musical style and form. Out-of-class rehearsals may be scheduled as needed to prepare for concerts. Preparation and performance of a solo or ensemble on the Florida Bandmasters Association list, grade one through seven, is required. Students progress to the next grade level upon earning a superior rating. Students in this class also perform with the Combined Symphonic Band and Symphony Orchestra. Attendance in all rehearsals and concert performances is required.
  • JAZZ BAND

    The jazz band and RE Combo are auditioned jazz ensembles that exist in the same class period to provide maximum flexibility in creating ensembles based on the experience and abilities of the aspiring jazz musician. The course develops a wide range of musical skills, including sight reading, ensemble playing, and rigorous technical  development on each student’s instrument; including articulation, tone, rhythm, and musicianship. Students learn advanced jazz theory, chord-scales and improvisation, and they study diverse styles and genres of this uniquely American art form. As an added educational benefit, students in this class are required to perform with the Combined Symphonic Band and Symphony Orchestra and are encouraged to participate in solo and ensemble competition as well. Frequent outside of school performing, competing, and touring is expected.
  • RE COMBO

    The jazz band and RE Combo are auditioned jazz ensembles that exist in the same class period to provide maximum flexibility in creating ensembles based on the experience and abilities of the aspiring jazz musician. The course develops a wide range of musical skills, including sight reading, ensemble playing, and rigorous technical  development on each student’s instrument; including articulation, tone, rhythm, and musicianship. Students learn advanced jazz theory, chord-scales and improvisation, and they study diverse styles and genres of this uniquely American art form. As an added educational benefit, students in this class are required to perform with the Combined Symphonic Band and Symphony Orchestra and are encouraged to participate in solo and ensemble competition as well.   • GUITAR 1

    This class offers a performance and study opportunity for beginning guitarists and those with little or no experience performing on a musical instrument. Students in this class will work predominantly in a large-group setting. Instruments are provided by the school. An introduction to all musical periods is included as students explore a variety of styles including pop, rock, blues, folk, jazz and others. Listening and historical discussions are part of the course. This class also offers opportunities on other instruments as called upon by the literature. These may include voice, electric guitar, ukulele, bass, percussion and other stringed instruments. This class will be included in performances when students have comfortably attained the necessary skills. Previous musical experience is not required.
  • GUITAR 2

    This class offers a performance and study opportunity for young guitarists. Performances include solo, duet, trio, quartet and large group settings. All instruments are provided by the school. An introduction to musical periods from the medieval to the contemporary are included as students explore a variety of styles including pop, folk, rock, blues, jazz, classical and others. Songwriting will be studied through music videos and work that includes learning chords and rhythm guitar techniques. Listening and historical discussions of popular music styles and periods are part of the course. This class also offers opportunities on voice, electric guitar, bass, percussion and other stringed instruments. This class will be a regular performing group as part of the RE Band program.
  • STRING ORCHESTRA

    The String Orchestra course is an exciting opportunity for students to develop their music reading, technical, musical and conceptual skills. By increasing their musical appreciation and sensitivity students continue to focus on developing their string performance abilities. The goal of this course is to focus on large-group performances, including the RE Symphony Orchestra. Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is required. There are opportunities for small ensemble performances and individual skill development. A wide variety of music is performed including classical, rock and popular. The orchestra has several performances during the year.
  • ADVANCED CHAMBER ENSEMBLE

    The Advanced Chamber Ensemble is an exciting course that provides an opportunity for students to perform standard professional repertoire composed for string chamber ensembles. The goal of this course is for the young musician to develop their musical, technical and artistic skills; technical development for the left and right hand, tone quality, musical style and form. In addition, score study and the development of active listening skills to enhance overall performance. There is a unique opportunity for students to audition and perform as members of either the RE String Quartet or the Advanced Chamber String Quartet. Members of the Advanced Chamber Ensemble will also perform with the RE Symphony Orchestra in several performances each year. Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is required and graded. There are additional performances at events both at RE and outside of school,  where the various string groups are featured.
  • ART OF DANCE

    In this course, students look at dance as an expression of human culture. Focusing on the interpretation, critique and usage of dance as a movement-based language, students learn to communicate emotions, experiences, viewpoints and creative narratives through the art of dance. Students learn about stretching and workout techniques, nutrition, body positivity and building self-confidence and skill through immersion and analysis of modern dance styles. Exploration of improvisation as well as partner and group work and student choreography will be a highlight in this course. Students have the opportunity to perform and choreograph pieces both in our dance shows and in various showcases throughout the year.
  • CONTEMPORARY DANCE METHODS

    This advanced level dance course is designed for upper school students who want to expand their movement vocabulary as well as examine in more detail the fundamentals of dance technique and principles of dance composition. This course will expand upon the skills and concepts learned in the introductory Art of Dance course. The class will focus on the essential components of the art of dance with an emphasis on jazz and ballet technique and be introduced to other styles of dance. Students learn about proper stretching, conditioning, nutrition and body positivity and build skills through immersion and analysis of modern dance styles. Exploration of improvisation as well as partner/group work will be a highlight in this course with the opportunity to choreograph and teach pieces to other students. Performance of various styles of choreography, including student and individual pieces, will culminate in two showcases at the end of each semester.
  • AP MUSIC THEORY

    This class teaches students college-level music theory and prepares students for the AP Music Theory Examination. Areas covered include ear-training (which involves rhythmic, melodic and harmonic dictation), written theory and form and analysis. A basic understanding of written and aural theory is required to take the course. This course is the laboratory component for the band, orchestra and vocal music courses. It is required that a student is either concurrently in another performing arts course, OR has had at least three years of active participation in the RE Performing Arts program. 

    Note that AP Music Theory provides elective credit only; it does not satisfy the graduation requirement in the arts.

Founded in 1903, Ransom Everglades School is a coeducational, college preparatory day school for grades 6 - 12 located on two campuses in Coconut Grove, Florida. Ransom Everglades School produces graduates who "believe that they are in the world not so much for what they can get out of it as for what they can put into it."
